Its been nearly six years since the triple meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi and TEPCO is still trying determine the precise location of the melted fuel. On Thursday some progress was made on Unit 2.
In 2016 a muon detection system showed most of the fuel remain within Unit 2's reactor pressure vessel. They concluded most of the melted fuel had fallen to the bottom of the reactor vessel and resolidified with some remaining in the reactor core.
However, the location of some of the fuel debris could not be determined conclusively. Hence, on Thursday the company sent a camera probe into the containment vessel for further investigation. The probe showed there is no obstacles in the area where next week they will send in another robot deeper into the containment vessel into an area below the pressure vessel.
